I am honestly so sick of my 16-80mm f4 lens. I bought it thinking it would be the perfect all-in-one for my X-T4 but the edge softness is just driving me crazy and I swear the autofocus hunts way more than it should in low light. I spent a fortune on this setup and half my vacation photos from last year look slightly blurry when I zoom in even a little bit. It's just so frustrating because I really want to love this system but the lens is letting me down big time.

I have a trip to Italy coming up in three weeks and I am genuinely considering just selling the 16-80 and starting over. I need something that actually stays sharp and gives me a decent range because I really dont want to be swapping primes while walking around Rome in the heat. My budget is around 900 bucks give or take and I dont mind buying used if I have to. Should I just get the 18-135 even though it's older or is that Tamron 17-70 actually worth the hype? Or maybe the 18-55 is just better? I honestly dont know anymore. What is the best travel zoom lens for the Fujifilm X-T4 that wont make me want to throw my camera in a canal?

I had similar issues with the Fujifilm XF 16-80mm f/4 R OIS WR and it was a total letdown for the price. Ngl the corner performance is pretty rough. I have to politely disagree about going for the Fujifilm XF 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 R LM OIS WR tho... if sharpness is your main gripe, that lens will honestly make you even more frustrated since it is quite a bit softer than what you have now. Technically, the Tamron 17-70mm f/2.8 Di III-A VC RXD is much better. That constant f/2.8 really helps the AF stop hunting in dim light. Quick tip: whatever you buy, check for firmware updates immediately. It really helps the X-T4 lens communication. Youll get those sharp shots, dont give up on the system yet!

Honestly, I had a similar headache with blurry shots until I switched to the Tamron 17-70mm f/2.8 Di III-A VC RXD. I took it on a trip to Greece last summer and I was so happy with it. It basically lived on my camera the whole time. It is a bit chunky, but that constant f2.8 is a lifesaver when you are inside old buildings or walking around at night. A few thoughts on why it works:

  • You can find them used for around $650 which is great for the budget.
  • The focus is way faster than the 16-80 and stays locked on the subject.
  • It is super sharp right to the edges, even when zoomed in. If you want to stay lighter, just grab a used Fujifilm XF 18-55mm f/2.8-4 R LM OIS. It is a classic for a reason and way sharper than people expect. It wont weigh you down in the Rome heat... that sun is really something else.

I totally feel your frustration on this! There is honestly nothing worse than getting home from a dream trip like Italy and realizing your photos are soft or blurry. It is so scary to think about ruining those precious memories! I am always super cautious with my gear because I just want things to be 100% reliable and safe when I am out exploring. You really need something that you can trust to nail the focus every single time without any weird hunting or glitches! I definitely agree that having a lens you can't rely on is the last thing you want on vacation. Having that peace of mind is worth so much! You are going to have such a fantastic time, just make sure you pick something solid so you can actually enjoy the sights without stressing. It makes the whole experience so much more amazing!
