Which Fujifilm lens is actually the gold standard for pro portraits because I am freaking out about a wedding shoot I have next month? I have been doing street photography for years on my X-T4 but I just landed a gig for a high-end wedding in London and the pressure is really starting to get to me. I keep seeing the 56mm f1.2 R WR mentioned everywhere and people say the bokeh is incredible but then I also read a bunch of threads saying the autofocus is too slow for moving subjects or it hunts in low light which makes me super nervous. Then there is the 50mm f1.0 which is twice the price but is it even worth that extra weight and cost? I am looking at a budget of about 1200 quid maybe a bit more if I stretch it but I just dont want to drop that much cash and end up with blurry shots because the lens couldnt keep up. I also looked at the 90mm f2 and some people swear by it for the compression but I am worried it might be too long for some of the indoor shots at the reception. My current kit is just the 23mm and 35mm f2 which are great for my personal stuff but they feel a bit consumer for a paid gig. Should I just stick with the 56mm and hope the AF isnt as bad as the internet says or is there something else I am missing...
I totally get why you are stressed about a wedding gig but honestly you should feel pretty good about the fuji system for this. I have been using the Fujifilm XF 56mm f1.2 R WR for a while now and the results are honestly fantastic. The optics on the newer WR version are a massive step up from the original... they actually redesigned the lens group to better handle the higher resolution sensors like the one in your X-T4. Tbh, the autofocus concerns are a bit overblown if you are used to how mirrorless systems work. It might not be as snappy as a lens with linear motors but for portraits its more than enough and i have no complaints about the hit rate in decent light. If you really need that instant, silent focus for the aisle walk, you might look at the Fujifilm XF 90mm f2 R LM WR because those quad linear motors are incredibly fast. I am very satisfied with the 90mm except for the focal length being a bit long for tight reception spaces. For your 1200 quid budget, you could actually snag the 56mm and maybe a used Fujifilm XF 50mm f2 R WR as a fast-focusing backup. The 56mm is definitely the gold standard though because the bokeh quality is just smoother than anything else in the lineup. The Fujifilm XF 50mm f1.0 R WR is technically impressive but the chromatic aberration at f1.0 can be a pain to fix in post and the weight will kill your wrist by the end of a 10-hour day. Stick with the 56mm, it works well and the sharpness is top tier.
The Fujifilm XF 16-55mm f2.8 R LM WR is the safest bet for AF reliability, but the Fujifilm XF 33mm f1.4 R LM WR is faster. Primes can be kinda risky tho.
The Fujifilm XF 50-140mm f2.8 R LM OIS WR is the standard workhorse for a reason. its way more reliable than the 56mm for moving subjects.
- Triple linear motors mean near-instant focus
- OIS is a lifesaver for dim London receptions
- 50-140mm range covers tight portraits and distant ceremony shots The Fujifilm XF 90mm f2 R LM WR has better bokeh but the zoom is safer when you dont have room to move.
Saw this earlier but just now responding! Like someone mentioned, the autofocus speed is what really matters for these big gigs. I was super nervous about my first wedding too, but I just went with some newer primes from Sigma and they were fantastic. The results were amazing and I saved a ton of cash. Honestly, just get any of their newer glass and you cant go wrong!
Can confirm this works. Did the same thing on mine and its been solid ever since.
