im so confused. just got my first fuji x-t30 and the kit lens is fine but i really want that blurry background look i keep seeing on instagram. people keep yelling about focal lengths and i just dont get it. my budget is like 400 bucks tops because i blew everything on the camera body already. im going to tokyo next month and just wanna walk around and take cool shots of signs and people without looking like a huge pro with a massive lens. is the 27mm pancake better or should i just get the 35mm f2? my logic was that smaller is better for travel but im honestly just guessing here...
Honestly, the Fujifilm XF 35mm f/2 R WR is way better than the pancake. The 27mm just didnt give me enough blur, kinda disappointed tbh. Grab the 35mm for Tokyo.
^ This. Also, be careful with the 35mm because the focus motor can be a bit noisy in quiet Tokyo streets. I picked up a Fujifilm XF 35mm f/2 R WR used for around 300 bucks, which is a steal. Just make sure to keep your shutter speed high if you aren't using a tripod. Honestly, that combo is super light for travel and keeps your setup looking really discreet.
Building on the earlier suggestion, are you planning on shooting mostly at night or during the day? I had issues with the 35mm f2 failing to lock focus in low light, which was frustrating during my last trip.
- Watch out for corner softness when shooting wide open
- Dont rely on the aperture ring when moving quickly Honestly, some people find the focal length a bit tight for street stuff. Have you tried setting your kit lens to 35mm for a full day to see how it feels?
Been thinking about your setup. Are you planning on doing mostly close-ups or wide street scenes? Check these out if you want to save cash:
