Is the 23mm f/2 WR still the undisputed king for Fuji street photography or should I actually drop the extra cash on the 18mm f/1.4 instead? I honestly cant decide and its driving me crazy because I have a trip to Tokyo coming up in about three weeks and I really need to get this sorted before I head out.
Ive been shooting with the kit lens for way too long now, and it just feels too bulky for walking around all day. I want something smaller that I can just tuck under my coat if I need to. The 23mm f/2 is obviously super tempting because of the price point and how tiny it is, plus it fits my budget way better right now, but part of me is worried I might miss out on that wider perspective and the extra speed of the 18mm f/1.4. I know the 18 is sharper but is it really worth that much more money for general street stuff? I guess Im just worried about the weight factor too. Does anyone have experience using both? Im usually doing candid shots of people and just general city architecture stuff at night. Im really stuck here...
Adding my two cents, I totally agree with the move toward smaller glass. If you want a perfect middle ground between those two, look at the Fujifilm XF 16mm f/2.8 R WR.
- It is way smaller than the 18mm f/1.4.
- The wider field of view is killer for Tokyo architecture.
- It balances perfectly on any body. Save the cash for more food while you're there, honestly. You'll be happy with the size and the results.
Like someone mentioned, small is king. Honestly, consider the Fujifilm XF 35mm f/1.4 R if you want that classic look. Its super sharp and compact enough for Tokyo nights. Just grab it.
Honestly, if you want something even more compact than the 23mm, consider the Fujifilm Fujinon XF 27mm f/2.8 R WR. It turns the camera into a true pocketable setup for Tokyo. The 18mm f/1.4 is amazing for low light, but it is heavy. If you really want that wider look without the bulk, look at the Fujifilm Fujinon XF 16mm f/2.8 R WR instead. It is tiny and sharp enough for city shots.
TL;DR: Grab the Fujifilm Fujinon XF 23mm f/2 R WR. It is plenty sharp, fits easily in a jacket, and honestly works perfectly for Tokyo's narrow streets. No complaints here.
