So I finally upgraded from my old X-T20 to the X-S20 and the IBIS is a total game changer for video but now Im stuck on glass. I usually stick to the kit lens but I want a proper prime for my trip to Tokyo next month. My budget is capped at like 700 bucks. I was looking at the 23mm f2 because its tiny but then I keep hearing the f1.4 version is way sharper even if its heavier. I do a mix of street and some low light stuff so Im torn between the fujicron portability and the faster aperture. Since the X-S20 has a deeper grip do you think the bigger lenses feel balanced? Which prime should I actually pull the trigger on?
Im really happy with the Fujifilm Fujinon XF 23mm f/2 R WR for my trips. It works well with the X-S20 and handles everything without any complaints. Go for it.
Building on the earlier suggestion, I have to throw the Viltrox 23mm f/1.4 XF into the mix. I have been shooting with Fuji gear for years and honestly, while the native lenses are great, this one hits a sweet spot that is hard to ignore. Its sharp enough for any street work you need in Tokyo and that extra aperture really helps when the sun goes down. The build quality feels super solid, and even with the X-S20s beefier grip, it feels perfectly balanced. Honestly, for the price point, you get performance that rivals stuff twice the cost. If you are worried about size, it is definitely chunkier than the f/2 options, but you wont regret that extra light when youre shooting in narrow alleys at night. I am totally satisfied with mine.

Since you have the X-S20, that deeper grip makes this lens feel totally balanced in your hand. The f/1.4 aperture is a massive jump over the f/2 lenses and it basically turns night into day for low light shots. It is super sharp, way cheaper than the Fuji red badge glass, and leaves you plenty of cash for sushi in Tokyo. The focal length is perfect for street stuff—it feels more natural than the 23mm imo. I have used it for years and it never lets me down. Just grab it and go, you wont regret it!
