Which portrait lens is best for the Fujifilm X-T4?

Im literally about to pull my hair out. I have spent so much money on this X-T4 setup and my portraits still look like absolute garbage because I’m stuck using the 18-55mm kit lens and it just isnt cutting it. The bokeh is messy and the eye autofocus keeps hunting or locking onto random objects in the background instead of the actual subject and I am honestly so stressed out. I have a major outdoor family session booked in Portland in exactly twelve days and if I dont figure out a better lens situation I’m going to look like a total amateur.

My budget is pretty tight right now since I just dropped a ton on the camera body so I have maybe 800 or 900 dollars max to spend on a dedicated portrait prime. I’ve been looking at the 56mm f1.2 but I keep reading these horror stories about how slow the autofocus is on the older R version and I cant afford the new WR version right now. Then people mention the 50mm f2 is super fast but I’m worried f2 wont give me that blurry background I’m craving. It’s like every time I think I found the right one I find a thread saying it sucks for one reason or another and it’s making me so anxious.

I’ve also seen the Viltrox 75mm f1.2 mentioned a lot lately but I’ve never used a third party lens before and I’m terrified it’s gonna glitch out or have some weird firmware issue right in the middle of my shoot. I just need something reliable and sharp that makes people look good without me having to fight the equipment every five minutes.

  • Fuji 56mm f1.2 (the old one)
  • Fuji 50mm f2
  • Fuji 90mm f2 (is this too long for tight spaces?)
  • Viltrox 75mm f1.2

Does anyone have experience with these specifically on the X-T4? I really need to pull the trigger on something today so it ships in time but I’m paralyzed by all these conflicting reviews...

In my experience, when you have a paid gig coming up, reliability is everything. I've tried many setups over the years and honestly, I'd stick with native glass to avoid any firmware anxiety... that Viltrox stuff can be hit or miss with updates. The Fujifilm XF 56mm f/1.2 R is the classic choice for a reason. Even if the autofocus is a bit slower than the newer WR version, it still produces images that look really expensive. On the X-T4, the eye-af actually handles it much better than on older cameras. For an outdoor Portland session though, I'd lean toward the Fujifilm XF 90mm f/2 R LM WR. Its weather resistant, which is a big plus for the PNW, and the autofocus is basically instant. I've found that the extra reach creates a background compression that makes subjects pop even more than the 56mm. You just need to make sure you have enough space to back up... its perfect for parks and very sharp.
