Which wide-angle lens is actually the best fit for the Fujifilm X-S20 for landscape stuff because I am losing my mind trying to decide before my trip to Olympic National Park next month. I have about $800 to spend and I've been staring at reviews for weeks now and honestly I'm more confused than when I started. I did some digging and everyone points to the XF 10-24mm f/4 R OIS WR because it has that zoom range which is super handy when you're hiking and cant always move your feet to frame the shot but then I see people swearing by the Viltrox 13mm f/1.4.
The Viltrox is supposed to be way sharper and it’s faster for low light if I decide to try some astro while I'm out there but it’s a prime lens so I’m worried I’ll feel trapped at just one focal length and miss the perfect shot because I couldnt zoom out or in. Plus the X-S20 is a pretty small body and I dont want something that makes the whole rig feel front-heavy or awkward to carry for miles on a trail through the Hoh Rainforest. I’m also looking at the Samyang 12mm but I dont know if I want to deal with manual focus even though it’s cheap and people say the image quality is decent for the price.
Is the weather sealing on the Fuji 10-24 worth the extra money for a place as rainy as the PNW?? I’m really scared of my gear getting fried if it starts pouring and the Viltrox doesnt have that same level of protection I think or maybe it does? Its hard to tell from the specs. But then some forum posts say the 10-24 is an old design and the optics arent as good on the newer sensors even though the X-S20 is the 26mp one not the 40mp. I just want something that makes those big mossy forests and coastline views look epic without having to carry a massive tripod everywhere. Should I just stick with the Fuji brand or is the third party stuff actually better now? My head is spinning and I need to buy something in the next week so I can practice with it before I fly out...
If you are heading to Olympic National Park, the weather sealing on the Fujifilm XF 10-24mm f/4 R OIS WR is probably gonna be the deciding factor. The Hoh Rainforest is one of the wettest spots in the country, so having that WR rating matters a lot. The optics on the 10-24mm are totally fine for the 26mp sensor on your X-S20, even if its an older optical design. It gives you that 15-36mm equivalent range which is way more flexible for framing those big coastal stacks at Rialto Beach without swapping glass in the wind. The Viltrox AF 13mm f/1.4 XF is definitely sharper and better for astro with that f/1.4 aperture, but it lacks official weather sealing and feels a bit like a brick on the smaller X-S20 body. Youll likely find it front-heavy on long hikes. If you want something lighter, the Samyang 12mm f/2.0 AF is a solid middle ground, but it still doesnt beat the Fuji for environmental protection. For a one-lens trip to the PNW, I would grab the Fuji zoom. Its just more practical when youre stuck in the rain...
Like someone mentioned, weight is a concern. Unfortunately, heavy zooms often underperform. Consider the Fujifilm XF 16mm f/2.8 R WR for its weather sealing, compact size, and professional build quality.
Unfortunately my kit failed in the mist once and ruined a trip. Do you have a rain cover or are you just gonna rely on seals that dont always work?
I totally agree about the rain concerns! Honestly, I had a scary moment last spring when my current setup got drenched during a sudden downpour. I love the shots I got, but the anxiety of seeing water droplets near the mount was terrible! It taught me that reliability is everything when you're miles from the car. Having gear that actually survives the elements is fantastic for your confidence!
