If you're doing Banff, the 35mm might actually feel a bit tight for those massive lake shots and peaks. Tbh, I've been beyond satisfied with the Leica APO-Summicron-SL 28mm f/2 ASPH. It uses the same insane apochromatic design as the 35 but gives you that extra bit of width. The corners are scary sharp even wide open, which is wild for a wide angle lens. I do a lot of large format printing and there's zero smearing at the edges. If you're really chasing the absolute peak of optical performance tho, the Leica APO-Summicron-SL 50mm f/2 ASPH is technically the sharpest lens Leica makes for the system. Its basically a laboratory instrument. I use it for multi-shot panos and the level of detail is just incredible. No complaints at all regarding micro-contrast. It has that bite that makes the rocks and trees look three-dimensional. The zoom is fine for convenience but if you want that 'window looking into the world' feel for a 60-inch print, these primes are the way to go. Just grab the 28mm and dont look back.

Honestly, everyone loves the Leica glass for a reason, but my back still hurts from carrying the big zooms up mountain trails. If you are worried about corner-to-corner sharpness for those big Banff prints but dont want to drop five grand, I switched things up a bit recently and found some great stuff.

• Panasonic LUMIX S PRO 50mm f/1.4 : This thing is a total beast. Its basically a Leica in a different shell. The resolution is insane and it handles the SL2 sensor perfectly.
• Sigma 35mm f/1.2 DG DN Art : This is a tank. Like, heavy. But for landscape shots where you want every needle on a pine tree to show up, it is incredibly sharp.
• Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 DG DN Art : Way better value than the Leica 24-90. Maybe slightly less sharp at the extreme edges at 24mm, but you save so much money for the actual trip itself. I hauled that Sigma 35mm on a hike last fall and while it was a workout for my shoulders, the prints I made look incredible. Unless you absolutely need that Leica branding, these other L-mount options are like 95 percent of the way there... maybe even 98 percent tbh.

• Just catching up on this thread. I switched to a dedicated wide prime for my mountain treks and honestly, I'm so satisfied with how it handles my Leica SL2 files. The clarity for large prints is just fantastic. Here is what worked for me:
• check the MTF charts on the manufacturer site
• browse the Fred Miranda forums for samples
• buy used to save cash My current setup works well and I have no complaints.
