Which L-mount prime lens is actually the sharpest for portraits because honestly Im getting so sick of reading conflicting reviews? Ive been trying to upgrade my kit for a series of actor headshots Im doing next month here in London and I need something that just nails the eye detail every single time. My budget is around 1500 bucks but Im just frustrated because every time I think Ive decided on a lens I find a new thread saying something totally different.
I read all over the place that the Sigma 85mm f1.4 Art is the king of sharpness but then I see these other guys saying the Panasonic 85mm f1.8 is basically indistinguishable in real world use and it makes me feel like Im about to waste 700 dollars for no reason. Is the extra glass really worth it or is it just hype? Then there is the Sigma 105mm f1.4 which everyone calls the bokeh master or whatever but it looks like a literal brick and I shoot outdoors a lot so I dont know if my wrists can handle that for a four hour session. I just want the absolute crispest image quality without it being a total nightmare to use. Is there a sleeper lens Im missing or is the 85mm Sigma really that much better than the Lumix version?
I went through this exact headache when I was prepping for a series of outdoor headshots near Shoreditch last summer. Honestly, I am extremely satisfied with the Sigma 85mm f1.4 DG DN Art L-Mount. It just works well for high-resolution work. I spent weeks staring at MTF charts and lab results before buying because I needed that clinical edge... it was kinda obsessive tbh. While the Panasonic Lumix S 85mm f1.8 L-Mount is a solid pick, the Sigma has superior micro-contrast. When I zoom into the iris at 200 percent, the detail is just objectively better on the Sigma glass. I used to worry about weight too, but the mirrorless DN version is way more manageable than the Sigma 105mm f1.4 DG HSM Art L-Mount brick. For actor headshots where you need that biting eye detail, the 85mm Art is basically perfect. No complaints at all.
