So I've been rocking my Canon 90D for about a year now mostly with the kit lens but I'm finally ready to jump into the prime lens world. I've got this little backyard wedding for my cousin coming up in late August so I really want that nice blurry background look that my zoom just isn't giving me right now. I did some digging online and everyone keeps saying to just get the EF 50mm f/1.8 because it's cheap and super sharp.
But then I saw some other threads saying on a crop sensor like the 90D it actually acts like an 80mm lens and that might be way too tight for a small backyard setting? I was looking at the 35mm f/2 IS USM instead since that would be closer to a "normal" 50mm view but it's way more expensive and I'm trying to stay under $500 if I can. Im just worried if I go with the 50mm I'll be constantly backing into walls trying to fit people in the frame but then the 35mm might not have that same "magic" for portraits. Since the 90D has such a high megapixel count I dont want to buy something that isn't gonna be sharp enough to handle the sensor anyway. Has anyone used both on a 90D specifically? Is the 35mm worth the extra cash for a general walk-around lens or should I just stick with the classic 50mm and deal with the crop...
Honestly, you might want to consider the actual space you'll have. I'd be careful with that 50mm in a cramped backyard because on your 90D it feels like a telephoto lens. I would suggest the Canon EF 35mm f/2 IS USM instead. Make sure to grab it used if needed since its way safer for group shots and very sharp. Better than being stuck against a fence all day... trust me.
