Looking for some recommended sports lenses for Nikon Z mount. Which one do you think is the best choice ?
Unfortunately, many of the newer Z mount options are becoming prohibitively expensive for what they offer. If you want to avoid wasting money on gear that fails when conditions get tough, you need to be very methodical. Here is my take on the main options:
- Nikon NIKKOR Z 70-200mm f/2.8 VR S: This is the only safe bet for reliability. The f/2.8 aperture is a must for freezing action. Unfortunately, the price tag is massive, which is disappointing for most people, but it is the only one that wont let you down.
- Nikon NIKKOR Z 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 VR S: I actually had issues with this one during a late afternoon match. Its not as good as expected once the light starts to fade. For the price, the slow aperture is a huge drawback and feels like a waste of money if you shoot indoors.
- Nikon NIKKOR Z 400mm f/4.5 VR S: This is a safer investment for reach, but losing the zoom flexibility is a real headache in fast-paced games. Tbh, buying a slow lens just leads to noisy photos and regret. Better to buy the right glass once than buy twice.
To add to the point above: the 180-600 is great for reach, but i'd be careful about the aperture if you're doing anything but bright daylight. I remember trying to use a slow zoom for an indoor volleyball match once and it was basically a disaster. The grain was everywhere because I had to crank the ISO so high just to freeze the movement. It really ruined what should have been some great shots of my nephew. I would suggest looking at these instead if you want more consistent results across different venues:
- Nikon NIKKOR Z 70-200mm f/2.8 VR S: Honestly the gold standard. The f/2.8 is non-negotiable for gym sports or night games under those terrible stadium lights. It's incredibly fast to focus.
- Nikon NIKKOR Z 400mm f/4.5 VR S: If you need serious reach for outdoor field sports, this is way sharper than the big zoom and feels so much lighter during a long game. Make sure to check the lighting where you'll be shooting most often. That f/6.3 on the 180-600mm might really bite you when the clouds come out or you move inside. Just my two cents after missing too many shots with slow glass...
Can confirm this works. Did the same thing on mine and its been solid ever since.
Did this last week, worked perfectly
I bought NIKKOR Z 180-600mm lens last month. For now, I think this lens is worth for sports photography.
