I recently got a Nikon Z6II mirrorless camera and want to use it for outdoor sports photography, mainly of my kids' soccer games and track meets. What Z-mount lens would you recommend for capturing fast action in daylight conditions? I'd prefer something relatively affordable if possible.

For outdoor sports, you'll want a lens with a fast aperture and zoom capability. The Nikkor Z 70-200mm f/2.8 VR S is an excellent choice. It's super sharp, focuses quickly, and has great zoom range for sports. The constant f/2.8 aperture is ideal for isolating subjects and shooting in various lighting. It's pricey at $2600 but well worth it if sports is your main focus.

For outdoor sports photography for Nikon Z mount system, Nikon Z 70-200mm f/2.8 VR S lens is often considered one of the best choices. Here’s why:

  1. Versatile Focal Length: The 70-200mm range is ideal for capturing action from a distance, whether you're shooting field sports, track events, or outdoor games.

  2. Fast Aperture: The constant f/2.8 aperture allows for excellent low-light performance and helps to isolate subjects with a beautiful depth of field.

  3. Image Stabilization: The built-in VR (Vibration Reduction) system helps to reduce camera shake, which is particularly useful when photographing fast-moving subjects or shooting at slower shutter speeds.

  4. Build Quality: As part of Nikon’s S-line, this lens is well-constructed, weather-sealed, and designed for performance in demanding situations.

  5. Autofocus Performance: The lens features fast and accurate autofocus, essential for capturing sharp images of fleeting moments in sports.

Been thinking about this since everyone keeps pushing the 70-200mm. It is a beast, dont get me wrong, but I learned the hard way that 200mm on a full-frame Z6 II feels like nothing when your kid is at the other end of the soccer pitch. Last season I spent half my time cropping my photos by 50 percent just to see the action, and you lose so much detail that way. You might want to consider the Nikkor Z 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 VR S instead. I know it is not f/2.8, but honestly, for outdoor games in daylight, you wont even notice the slower aperture and that extra reach is a total lifesaver for track meets too. Just a warning tho, it is a bit of a workout for your wrists if you arent using a monopod. If that is too pricey, I would suggest looking at the Tamron 70-300mm f/4.5-6.3 Di III RXD for Nikon Z. It is way more affordable and super light, but be careful because it doesnt have built-in VR. You will be relying entirely on the Z6 II in-body stabilization, so make sure to keep your shutter speeds really high or your shots might come out soft if you are shaky at the long end.

The new NIKKOR Z 180-600mm lens is another great choice.

For outdoor sports photography with Nikon's Z system,  Nikon Z 70-200mm f/2.8 VR S lens is often regarded as one of the best options. This lens offers a versatile focal range that’s ideal for capturing fast-paced action, while its f/2.8 aperture provides excellent low-light performance and subject separation through beautiful background blur.

For even more versatility, you might also consider Nikon Z 24-70mm f/2.8 VR S for wide-angle to standard zoom capabilities, which can be helpful in dynamic situations where you might need to adjust your composition quickly.
