Ive been shooting with my D7500 for like four years now and Im usually a prime lens guy - give me a 35mm or 50mm and Im happy. But heres the thing, I finally booked this trip to Glacier National Park in Montana for next month and my logic was okay, I finally need some real reach. Ive never really done wildlife before so this is a totally new hurdle for me and honestly Im a bit stumped. I started looking at the Nikon 70-300mm AF-P because its cheap but then I saw there are like three different versions and some dont even have VR? That seems like a total disaster for handheld shooting at 300mm. Then I thought about the Sigma 150-600mm but thats way too heavy and expensive for what I need right now. Im trying to stay under $450 if possible, maybe $500 if its really worth it. Is the Tamron 70-300mm any good compared to the native Nikon glass? I want something that wont hunt for focus too much when a bear or something actually shows up lol. My brain is kinda fried looking at all these MTF charts and old forum threads from 2016. Whats the move for a solid budget zoom that wont feel like a toy?

If you want something that feels solid and just works, look for a used Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G IF-ED VR. I have been so satisfied with mine; it feels way more premium than the cheaper plastic kits. The autofocus is snappy and the VR is basically essential for those long handheld shots. Youll have plenty of cash left for park snacks!

Building on the earlier suggestion about avoiding those noisy older lenses, you absolutely have to look at the AF-P glass! I remember my first trip to the mountains with a heavy setup and I was miserable by noon lol. Then I grabbed the Nikon AF-P DX NIKKOR 70-300mm f/4.5-6.3G ED VR for a steal and it totally changed my hiking game. It weighs basically nothing and the focus is literally instant... like, blink and its locked on. Heres why I love this specific one for your D7500:

  • The VR is insane, Ive gotten sharp shots at 1/30th handheld at the long end.
  • It is dead silent, so you wont spook any wildlife.
  • You can find them used or refurbished for under $200 easily! If you want to spend more of your budget, look for the Nikon AF-P NIKKOR 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6E ED VR which is the full frame version. Its got better weather sealing and feels a bit more pro, but the DX version is such an amazing bargain!

I actually picked up an older Tamron 70-300mm f/4-5.6 Di LD Macro a few years back because I was being cheap, and unfortunately, it was a total mistake. I took it out for some birding and the autofocus was so loud and slow that everything flew away before it even locked on. Total disaster. You definitely want to avoid the non-VR Nikon stuff too, shooting at 300mm without stabilization is basically a recipe for blurry junk unless youre on a tripod 24/7. Its frustrating how many versions they have... I eventually gave in and got the Nikon AF-P DX NIKKOR 70-300mm f/4.5-6.3G ED VR. While the plastic mount feels kinda flimsy and it isnt as good as expected in low light, the focus speed is decent for the price. Just make sure you specifically look for the VR letters or youll be disappointed.
