I just picked up a Nikon Z6II and love it, but I’m struggling to find one 'do-it-all' lens for travel. I want something versatile enough for landscapes and street photography without being too bulky. I’ve looked at the 24-120mm f/4 S and the 24-200mm. Which one provides the best balance of sharpness and portability for everyday use?
+1 to what was said earlier. i think...
1. Nikon NIKKOR Z 24-120mm f/4 S is way sharper.
2. Nikon NIKKOR Z 24-200mm f/4-6.3 VR was soft... unfortunately dont use it on ur Z6II.
Totally agree with the above! The Nikon NIKKOR Z 24-120mm f/4 S is basically the king of value. Ive been shooting Nikon for years and that constant f/4 is a huge deal for street stuff when light drops. Honestly, check the used market... u can find a mint copy for way less than retail. The Nikon NIKKOR Z 24-200mm f/4-6.3 VR is a decent option, but u lose too much light.
I just found this thread and had to jump in because I went through this exact same debate last year! I spent months researching before finally pulling the trigger on the Nikon NIKKOR Z 24-120mm f/4 S. Honestly, it has been an absolute game changer for my workflow. It is amazing how it handles harsh lighting conditions without any weird ghosting! Here is how I look at the reliability and value:
- The build quality of the 24-120mm is fantastic for long trips. I used to carry a bag full of primes, but this lens is so reliable and sharp that I rarely swap it out now.
- If you are looking for serious cost-effectiveness, dont sleep on the Nikon NIKKOR Z 24-70mm f/4 S either. I found a used copy recently for around 400 dollars and it is incredibly compact for light travel days. But for the Z6II, that extra reach on the 120mm is just fantastic for street photography and portraits. It really is the best balance of build quality and versatility out there... love it!
honestly i've used both and i'd pick the Nikon NIKKOR Z 24-120mm f/4 S. it's way sharper, tho the Nikon NIKKOR Z 24-200mm f/4-6.3 VR is lighter... but for me the S-line glass is unbeatable.
Commenting to find later
I gotta agree with the consensus here, the Nikon NIKKOR Z 24-120mm f/4 S is the safe bet for a daily driver. Ive been really satisfied with how it handles dust and moisture compared to those variable aperture zooms, no complaints about the build at all. It just feels solid and dependable in the field which is what matters. Speaking of keeping things solid, I actually spent my morning trying to repair a sticky latch on my old hardshell gear case using a bit of lithium grease and a tiny screwdriver. It was a real pain to get it to click right again but now it finally closes like new. Much better than shelling out for a replacement if you can fix it yourself. Anyway, that lens is definitely the one that wont let you down.
