Finally did it. Traded in my trusty D850 for a Z8 and man the autofocus is just next level... but now im staring at my bag of F-mount glass and the FTZ adapter just feels like a band-aid. I really want to experience that native Z mount sharpness everyone keeps raving about without lugging a giant bag of primes through Tokyo next month. I’m looking for that one desert island lens that can basically live on my camera 90% of the time because my shoulder cant take the heavy bag anymore.

Ive been looking at the 24-70 f2.8 S because obviously its the gold standard but it feels a bit heavy for a whole day of walking? Then there is the 24-120 f4 which people say is actually sharper than it has any right to be. Im also weirdly tempted by the 24-200 for the convenience but I worry I’ll regret the variable aperture when the sun goes down in Shinjuku. I havent shot with an f4 zoom in years so im a bit nervous about the bokeh or lack thereof compared to my old 24-70 G lens.

Here is what I need to check off:

  • Budget: Id like to stay under $2000 if possible but could stretch for something life-changing if the value is there.
  • Weight: Needs to be manageable for 10+ miles of walking a day through cities.
  • Performance: Edge to edge sharpness is a big deal to me since I do a lot of landscape stuff too.
  • Build: Needs to handle some light rain or humidity since I'm traveling during the rainy season.

I usually shoot a mix of everything - some street, some architecture, and definitely some food shots. Should I just stick with the f2.8 pro glass or is the f4 stuff really that good on these new sensors? I’ve heard the Z mount allows for way better lens designs so maybe I dont need the massive glass anymore? Im torn between the 24-70 2.8 and the 24-120 f4... or is there some sleeper lens I'm totally missing out on?

TL;DR: Grab the Nikon NIKKOR Z 24-120mm f/4 S. Its the safest bet for travel and wont let you down in the rain. Honestly, I was pretty disappointed with the Nikon NIKKOR Z 24-70mm f/2.8 S. Everyone raves about it, but its just way too heavy for walking miles in a city. I also had issues with the Nikon NIKKOR Z 24-200mm f/4-6.3 VR... it felt a bit flimsy and the shots werent as sharp as I expected for the price. The 24-120mm is much more reliable. Its sharp edge-to-edge which is great for those Tokyo cityscapes. Unfortunately, people think they need f2.8 for everything, but the Z8 sensor is so good you really dont. Its a solid, direct choice that just works without the extra weight.
