What is the best all-around lens for Nikon Z series?

Ive been shooting with the D850 for years but finally made the jump to the Z7II last month and honestly the transition has me stressing out way more than I thought it would. I thought I could just slap my old glass on the FTZ adapter and be fine but the balance is just totally off and it feels way too front heavy for long days out. I have this huge trip to Iceland coming up in like three weeks and I really want to travel light for once without bringing a whole bag of primes like I usually do. My budget is capped at around $1500 max because the camera body already cleared me out. I was looking at the 24-120mm f/4 because everyone says the S-line glass is insanely sharp but then I see people swearing by the 24-70 f/4 for the weight savings or even that 24-200 superzoom which sounds convenient but Im worried about the edge sharpness for landscape shots. I need something that can handle wind and maybe some light rain without me worrying about the electronics dying on me. Is the 24-120 really the gold standard for a do-it-all or am I gonna regret not having that f/2.8 when the light gets low in the fjords? What is honestly the best all-around lens for the Z series if you can only take one?

Like someone mentioned, the 24-120 is a solid pick. You might want to consider the Nikon NIKKOR Z 24-200mm f/4-6.3 VR too. Be careful with:

  • Variable aperture
  • Soft corners

Like someone mentioned, the 24-120 is probably the best all-rounder for this. But if youre really trying to save money after that body purchase, look for a used Nikon NIKKOR Z 24-70mm f/4 S. It's super light, sharp, and weather sealed. You can snag one for way under budget, leaving you cash for a nice tripod... Iceland winds are no joke, so youll want the stability anyway.

In my experience, Nikon NIKKOR Z 24-120mm f/4 S is the safest bet for Iceland. It's built like a tank and handles the rain better than any cheap zooms, tbh.
