I finally pulled the trigger on a Z6ii for my trip to Japan in three weeks and now im spiraling over lenses. I spent hours on YouTube and everyone says the 24-120mm f/4 S is the best thing ever but then I keep seeing people saying the 24-200mm is way more practical for travel because of the extra reach. I dont want to be that person fumbling with glass in the middle of a crowded street in Tokyo and missing the shot.

Is the constant f/4 really worth losing that extra zoom? My budget is capped at $1100 so I can only get one. Im just worried the 24-200 will be too dark for evening shots... what should I do?

Honestly, I would suggest going with the Nikon NIKKOR Z 24-120mm f/4 S. I went through this exact same spiral before a big trip to Italy and ended up with a slower superzoom, and man, I regretted it as soon as the sun started setting. I remember being in these narrow, dimly lit alleys and my lens was already at f/6.3 by the time I zoomed in even a tiny bit. The photos were just grainy messes because the ISO had to skyrocket to keep up. Japan has so many amazing night scenes, especially in places like Shinjuku or those tiny bars in Golden Gai, and you really dont want to be limited by that variable aperture. The 24-120 is just a different beast quality-wise. Its part of the S-line, which means it stays sharp across the whole range. Be careful with those all-in-one lenses like the Nikon NIKKOR Z 24-200mm f/4-6.3 VR because while the reach is tempting, the image quality usually takes a hit at the long end. Plus, 120mm is actually plenty for most street stuff. If you really need more, you can always crop in a bit on that Z6ii sensor since the glass is so sharp anyway. You might want to consider that youll likely value the crispness and low-light performance way more than the ability to zoom way in. Make sure to think about how much youll actually be shooting after 5 PM. Trust me, losing that light is a huge headache when youre trying to capture the vibe of a neon-lit street... it just feels like youre fighting your gear the whole time.
