Need a portrait lens for my D750 asap since I have a graduation shoot next Saturday. Im torn between the Nikon 85mm f/1.8G and the Sigma 85mm Art. The Sigma is way pricier and kinda heavy but the sharpness is wild. Budget is around 600 bucks. Is the extra cash worth it for the Sigma?
Honestly, skip the Sigma. My Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 85mm f/1.8G has never let me down. It's light, sharp enough for portraits, and definitely fits your budget better.
Honestly, I had a tough time with the Sigma 85mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art when I first got it. It is super sharp, yeah, but the autofocus was super finicky on my D750 and it just missed focus way more than I expected for the price. Unfortunately, dealing with the micro-adjustments in the dock was a nightmare for me, and for a shoot as soon as next week, you probably dont want that headache. If you really want that crisp look without the weight, maybe check out the Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 85mm f/1.8G. It feels way better balanced on the D750 body anyway. Dont overthink it, just grab something reliable so you arent messing with settings during the graduation. Good luck with the shoot, hope it goes well!
Honestly, if you have a shoot next Saturday, you need gear you can trust right out of the bag! I actually shot a wedding last year using the Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 85mm f/1.8G and the results were just fantastic. It never misses a beat on my D750 and it is light enough to carry all day without killing your wrist. Here is why I suggest keeping it simple:
- The Nikon focus is lightning fast and super reliable
- You will save enough money to grab a SanDisk Extreme Pro 128GB SDXC UHS-I card or a new battery
- The bokeh is creamy and lovely for graduation shots Don't overthink the sharpness charts because the Nikon is more than sharp enough for portraits. Why spend extra on the heavy Sigma when the native glass just works perfectly? Go with the Nikon and have a blast at your shoot!
