Which prime lens should I buy for my Nikon D850?

So I've been shooting with the D850 for about two years now and I absolutely love the body but I'm running into this weird bottleneck where my current lenses just arent doing the 45 megapixel sensor justice. My old 24-120mm was fine on my D750 but now that I'm cropping in it just looks like mush and its honestly driving me crazy.

My logic was that I should grab a high quality prime to really see what this thing can do. I'm looking for something for a gig I have coming up in Big Sky next month where I'll be doing a mix of landscape and some outdoor portraits. Budget is sitting around $1300 but I could go a bit higher if it's worth it.

I keep going back and forth between:

  • Nikon 35mm f/1.8G ED (lighter, cheaper)
  • Sigma 35mm f/1.4 Art (everyone says it's sharp but is the AF reliable?)
  • Maybe a 24mm?

I'm leaning towards the 35mm focal length because it's versatile but then I start thinking if I should go for an 85mm for the portraits instead. The D850 resolution is such a double edged sword because now I feel like I need to replace my whole kit just to get those crisp details. Does the Sigma Art glass actually hold up on these high res sensors or should I just stick to the Gold Ring Nikon stuff to be safe...
