Late to the party but you should totally look at the Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 85mm f/1.8G! It is absolutely amazing for portraits on a D7500 and the build quality is super reliable. Honestly it is a total steal if you find one used for under $400. The bokeh is way better than the kit lens and it is gonna make those graduation photos look fantastic!

I totally get the kit lens frustration! For your D7500, the Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 50mm f/1.8G is a total lifesaver for portraits because it is so sharp and reliable! I also love the Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 35mm f/1.8G for tighter spots. The 50mm gives that amazing blurry background you want, while the 35mm is fantastic for full-body shots. Both are super safe, high-quality picks for your budget!

In my experience, the Tamron SP 45mm f/1.8 Di VC USD is a sleeper hit. The vibration control is huge for fixing your blurry shots on that d7500, tbh.
