Which prime lens should I buy for a Nikon D850 body?

I am honestly so over looking at lens charts and YouTube reviews for my D850. This sensor is so picky and it is driving me crazy because every flaw shows up. I have a wedding gig in Chicago in three weeks and I desperately need a solid 35mm but I am totally stuck. It is basically the Nikon 35mm 1.4G vs the Sigma Art version. I am leaning toward the Sigma because its way cheaper and my budget is strictly $1k max but everyone says the AF is a total nightmare on these high res bodies. Is the Nikon actually worth the extra $400 for a used copy or am I just overthinking the Sigma focus issues?

The D850 sensor is a beast, so I totally get why you're stressing over those charts. I've been very happy with the Sigma 35mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art for Nikon F lately and honestly, I think the AF horror stories are a bit overblown if you put in the work. You dont have to blow your budget on native glass to get those sharp results.

  • Calibration: Grab the Sigma USB Dock for Nikon and spend an hour setting it up. It makes a massive difference for consistency on high-res bodies.
  • Alternatives: Definitely check out the Tamron SP 35mm f/1.4 Di USD. It is crazy sharp and fits your $1k budget perfectly even brand new. The Sigma works well enough for weddings once it is dialed in and no complaints here using it for paid work. If you are looking to save that extra 400 bucks for travel or extra batteries, it is a solid bet tho... just make sure to test it before you head to Chicago.

In my experience, weddings are too stressful for gear you cant 100% trust. I've tried many setups over the years, and I once lost a crucial reception shot because my third-party lens wouldn't lock focus. On that D850, you need consistency.

  • Just get the Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 35mm f/1.4G used.
  • Native glass handles the high-res sensor better. Stick with the Nikon... the peace of mind is worth it.

Just found this thread and wanted to share my experience since I went through this exact panic last year before a couple of big event shoots. I ended up choosing the native version and here is how it played out for me:

  • I was super worried about the extra cost but honestly, I have been so satisfied with how it works well under pressure.
  • During a fast-paced reception, the autofocus just locked on every single time with zero complaints.
  • My buddy went the cheaper route with the third-party one and spent hours calibrating it, while I just slapped mine on the body and went to work. For me, not having to worry about micro-adjustments on the D850 sensor made the whole experience totally stress-free.
