I’m shooting run-and-gun docs on a Sony FX3 and want to move to a cine lens, but I’m worried about size and focus speed. Ideally I need something lightweight, with a usable focus throw and minimal breathing, and I’m mostly on a gimbal + handheld. Budget is around $1,500–$2,000—what cine lens (or set) would you recommend for this setup?
- Story time: I tried going “true cine” on my FX3 for docs and ngl… gimbal days got OLD fast. Long throw was nice, but I missed quick AF pulls and my wrists hated me.
- Option A (cine primes) vs B (photo glass) vs C (cine-ish hybrids): A felt best mechanically, B was fastest/reactive, C was the sweet spot for weight/value, imo.
- Quick Qs: are you pulling focus yourself or with a 1st AC? And do you need hard stops for follow focus, or just smoother manual feel?
Ok so for run-and-gun on the FX3, the big “cine lens” thing is: longer focus throw + consistent gearing is nice, but weight + slow-ish AF (or no AF) can wreck gimbal/handheld days. That’s why I’d suggest DZOFILM Vespid Prime 25mm T2.1 Sony E-mount (or the Vespid 35mm if you live there) — I’ve dragged these around on a gimbal and they’re honestly the sweet spot: light for cine, smooth throw, and breathing is pretty well controlled for doc work. Just be careful: you’re basically committing to manual focus, so make sure to set up peaking/magnify and practice quick pulls before a real shoot. cheers
Story time: I went through this last year on an FX3—wanted “cine” feel but still gimbal-friendly. What actually worked for me was going light + consistent mechanics:
- Sigma 28-70mm F2.8 DG DN Contemporary Sony E-mount for 90% (fast AF, lighter than the 24-70s)
- Sony FE PZ 16-35mm F4 G when I needed zero drama on a gimbal (servo zoom is clutch)
- Samyang V-AF 35mm T1.9 Sony E-mount when I wanted cine handling w/ usable AF
ngl, pure manual cine primes slowed me down a lot in docs
Quick q: are you pulling focus manually or need AF on gimbal? If manual, I’d compare Samyang V-AF 24mm T1.9 Sony E (light, safe on gimbal) vs Sigma 28-45mm F1.8 DG DN Art Sony E (heavier, versatile) vs Sony FE PZ 28-135mm F4 G OSS (reliable, BIG).
To add to the point above: reading all this talk about weight and focus throw really takes me back! I remember when I first got into the technical side of things and became totally obsessed with comparing the micro-specs between different brands. It was wild! I spent like three weeks building these insane spreadsheets comparing the exact T-stop light transmission data and housing diameters. I was so convinced that knowing the precise weight to the gram would make my handheld rig perfect. My roommate actually caught me at 2 AM one night trying to measure the torque required to turn the focus ring on two different setups just to see which one felt more premium! It was a total disaster honestly... we ended up just sitting on the floor surrounded by gear, debating the merits of different lens coatings and color science for hours instead of actually filming anything. Such a fun, chaotic time when you're just starting to geek out on the hardware! It's just amazing how much detail goes into these things and how deep the rabbit hole goes once you start looking at the data.
Just wanted to say thanks for everyone chiming in. Super helpful discussion.
