Whats the best single lens for a Sony camera that can basically do everything?

I just bought an a6400 for my Japan trip in ten days and I am totally lost with all these numbers and brands. Is there something under $600 thats good for scenery and close-ups? I dont want to be swapping lenses while walking around Tokyo...

Jumping in here because you need to be careful about the crop factor on that a6400. Since it is an APS-C sensor, an 18mm lens actually behaves like a 27mm, which might not feel wide enough for those narrow Tokyo alleys. I would suggest looking at the Sony E 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 OSS as a very reliable middle ground. It is extremely lightweight for travel and usually stays under your budget. Make sure to check the technical reviews on sites like DPReview or look at the MTF charts on DXOMARK before committing; they give a better idea of edge sharpness than random YouTube videos. You should also keep in mind that these all-in-one zooms usually have variable apertures, meaning they wont perform as well once the sun goes down in Shinjuku. If you prioritize low light over zoom range, the Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 DC DN Contemporary is technically superior, though you lose that extra reach for close-ups.

Honestly, you gotta look at Tamron! Their zoom lenses are absolutely amazing for travel and basically saved my life when I was in Japan last year. Just grab any of their all-in-one zooms and call it a day. The quality is fantastic for the price and you wont have to swap anything while walking around. Tamron is the king of do-it-all glass for Sony imo, you really cant go wrong!
