What is the best all-around lens for Sony E-mount cameras?

So I bought this Sony a6400 last month because I am finally going on my dream trip to Italy in like three weeks and I really wanted to take better photos than what I get on my iPhone 13 but man I am so incredibly lost right now. I thought the little lens that came in the box would be totally fine but everything I take looks kinda blurry or just flat and when the sun starts going down it gets all grainy and weird. I started trying to look up what else I could buy and it is just a nightmare of numbers and letters like 24-70mm and f/2.8 and OSS and I have literally no idea what any of that actually means for a regular person who just wants a nice picture.

I went into a camera shop here in Chicago yesterday and the guy behind the counter was trying to push this G Master thing on me that cost like two thousand dollars which is just crazy because my total budget for a new lens is maybe $600 or $700 at the very most after I already spent a ton on the camera and the plane tickets. I just want one single lens that stays on the camera the whole time. Like I want to be able to take a photo of a big cathedral or a wide street but then also be able to zoom in a little bit to get a nice shot of my wife at a cafe without it looking like a blurry mess in the background.

Does a do it all lens even exist for these Sony cameras or am I just asking for too much? I feel so dumb even asking this but I am getting so frustrated with all the technical talk online that makes it seem like I need a whole suitcase of gear just to go on vacation. Is there one best lens that works for everything so I dont have to keep switching things out while we are walking around Rome? I really dont want to regret this purchase or end up just using my phone because the big camera is too confusing...

I totally get the frustration. I was in the same boat before my trip to Spain and ended up getting the Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 DC DN Contemporary for Sony E. I am so satisfied with it because it just works.

  • its tiny and light
  • f2.8 helps in dark churches
  • way sharper than the kit lens It fits your budget perfectly at around 500 bucks. No complaints!
