trip to Japan is in two weeks and im legit panicking because i cant decide on a lens. i have about $800 to spend on my a7iv. stuck between getting the tamron 28-75 g2 or a used sigma 24-70 art. which is the better all-arounder for street and landscapes?...

honestly ive been super happy with the Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 Di III VXD G2 for my travel setup. I took it to Kyoto last year and it was basically glued to my a7iv the whole time. Since youre doing street and landscapes, that extra 4mm on the wide end of the Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 DG DN Art is nice to have, but man, that lens is a literal brick to carry around all day. The Tamron is way lighter and honestly feels just as sharp in most real-world shots. If youre walking 20k steps a day in Tokyo, your neck will seriously thank you for skipping the heavy glass. Ive had zero complaints with the autofocus speed either, its snappy enough for quick street snaps. Go with the Tamron, it works so well as a one-lens solution and wont kill your shoulder.

Regarding what #1 said about "honestly ive been super happy with the Tamron...", I agree but you might want to consider the weight. Maybe look for the Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 Di III VXD G2 used to save cash. Be careful with your budget because Japan is pricey and you wont want an empty wallet. The Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 DG DN Art is a total brick for all-day walking tho...

Unfortunately I have the same problem right now and it’s basically impossible to find something that doesnt compromise on optics for under a grand. I've been checking MTF charts and resolution data all morning and honestly nothing is as good as expected. @Reply 2 - good point! about the money too, Japan is pricey. Just search for best Sony travel zoom on YouTube, there is a great video that compares all the specs and it's like the first result. Reddit also has tons of threads on this if you search there. I'm still stuck deciding too... the technical trade-offs just suck.

Man I wish I found this thread sooner. Would have saved me so much hassle.

Saw this thread this morning and it really reminded me of the headache from my last big trip. Trying to save a few bucks with a third-party lens was honestly such a letdown once the shooting actually started.

  • Connection issues between the lens and the camera kept happening while walking around, which was super frustrating.
  • Fixing it myself seemed like a good idea, but I almost stripped the tiny screws on the mounting plate and just made the wobble worse.
  • Image quality just was not as good as expected, especially the sharpness in the corners for my landscape shots. Missing those moments felt pretty bad. Tbh, just stick with Sony. You can't go wrong with their own brand for your body... they just work like they are supposed to without all the drama.
