What is the best all-around zoom lens for Sony mirrorless cameras because I am literally losing my mind trying to pick one for my trip to Tokyo next month! I finally saved up enough for an A7IV and I want just one lens to rule them all since I'm only taking a single backpack and cant be bothered swapping glass while walking around crowded streets.
I’ve narrowed it down to a few options but I keep changing my mind every hour:
- Tamron 28-75mm f2.8 G2
- Sigma 24-70mm f2.8 Art
- Sony 24-105mm f4 G
The Tamron is super tempting because its light and fits my budget perfectly but then I saw the Sigma and people say that extra 4mm on the wide end is a game changer for architecture and tight city shots. But then I think maybe the Sony 24-105 is better for the reach even though its only f4? I'm worried about nighttime shots in the city if I go with the slower f4 lens.
My budget is strictly under $1100 so I'm looking at used or sale prices mostly and I need to buy it by Friday so it arrives before my flight. Is the Sigma too heavy for carrying all day long? I'm just so stoked to finally have a full frame setup but man the choices are paralyzing...
Honestly, I’d avoid the Sigma 24-70mm f2.8 DG DN Art for a trip like this. I had issues with the weight on mine and it basically ruined my day after a few hours of walking around. It’s just too bulky for a single-backpack setup. Unfortunately, the Sony FE 24-105mm f4 G OSS is also a bit of a letdown... that f4 aperture is really not as good as expected for night street photography in places like Shinjuku. You'll just end up with grainy results when the sun goes down. You should probably just stick with the Tamron 28-75mm f2.8 Di III VXD G2. It’s the most budget-friendly way to get f2.8 without the back pain. I was kinda disappointed with the build quality compared to the more expensive Sony glass, but it gets the job done for way less money. Don’t overthink it or you’ll miss the sale window... saving that cash for your actual trip is the move anyway.
