Im honestly so fed up with my heavy zoom lens, it is killing my wrist during long street shoots here in Chicago and the images just lack that special pop. Im ready to ditch it completely for one god-tier prime lens that stays on my A7IV permanently. I have a trip next month and need to buy this ASAP.

Budget is around 1500 max. Here is what I need:

  • Insanely sharp even wide open
  • Light enough to carry all day (ideally under 600g)
  • Fast autofocus because I shoot fast-moving street scenes

Whats the absolute best ultimate prime for Sony full-frame that fits this? Im losing my mind looking at reviews...

Chicago street photography is brutal when you are lugging around a heavy zoom all day. You need something nimble but powerful. You absolutely need to get the Sony FE 35mm f1.4 GM. Seriously, this lens is pure magic and it fits your budget perfectly! I have been shooting with it on my own A7IV for over a year now and it basically never leaves my camera. It weighs just 524 grams, so it balances beautifully on the body and wont kill your wrist after eight hours of walking. What makes it god-tier is the rendering. The sharpness wide open at f/1.4 is just unreal, and it has this gorgeous, creamy 3D pop that makes your subjects stand out. Plus, the autofocus uses Sonys XD linear motors. It locks onto targets instantly, so you wont miss those fast candid moments on the CTA or busy sidewalks. Let me know if you want me to share some sample shots, would love to show you what this beast can do!

Honestly, I would be really careful about dropping your entire 1500 budget on one of those high-end G Master primes. I had high hopes for some of the premium Sony glass lately, but unfortunately, I had issues with decentering on two different copies right out of the box. The quality control just isnt as good as expected for that price point, and walking around Chicago with a 1400 dollar target on your camera makes me paranoid anyway. If you want to save a ton of cash and still get that rendering pop, look at the Sigma 35mm f2 DG DN Contemporary. It is an absolute gem. I bought one used for cheap and it blew me away. The build quality is actually better than some of Sonys pricier options because it is all metal, and it weighs next to nothing. Autofocus keeps up perfectly with fast street action on my A7IV. Spending the max budget right away is a trap. Going with something like the Sigma leaves you with plenty of leftover cash for travel expenses or a couple of extra batteries for your trip. Just make sure to buy from a shop with a good return policy, just in case.

In my experience, you have two clear paths depending on how much weight you want to shave off.

  • Sony FE 35mm f1.4 GM
  • Absolute god-tier rendering, fits right under your 600g limit at 524g, and autofocus is instant.
  • Sony FE 35mm f1.8
  • The practical alternative. Its dirt cheap, weighs only 280g, and honestly gets you 90% of the way there. I would grab the GM if you want that special rendering, but the f1.8 is the smarter street tool.
