Seriously, which prime lens is actually worth it for the a7IV because I feel like I'm losing my mind with these soft images. I spent way too much money on this body thinking it would be a total game changer but my current setup is just so heavy and honestly kind of dull looking. I've been using the basic zoom that came with it and then I tried this cheap 50mm I found used but it's just hunting for focus constantly and it's driving me insane. I missed so many shots of my niece's birthday party last weekend because the autofocus just couldn't keep up or it would lock onto the background instead of her face and I just felt like a total amateur standing there while everyone else got better shots on their phones.
I'm getting really anxious that I made a huge mistake switching systems. I have a trip to Seattle coming up in three weeks and I really want one solid, do-it-all prime that isn't going to break my back or my bank account more than it already is. My budget is capped at about $1100 maybe $1200 if I really stretch it but I just want something sharp that has that actual pop everyone talks about online. I've been looking at the 35mm f1.4 GM but it's so expensive and I'm terrified I'll buy it and still be unhappy with the results or find it too bulky. Or maybe the 55mm Zeiss? But people say that one is getting old now. I don't know if I should go 35 or 50 or maybe even 85 though 85 feels too tight for walking around the city. I'm just tired of carrying around this giant brick of a camera with a lens that doesn't even make the photos look better than my phone half the time... it's honestly depressing. What are you guys actually using that doesn't feel like a total compromise?
Wait, I just realized I didn't mention I'm mostly doing street stuff and some indoor family stuff so low light matters a lot to me since I'm usually in gloomy cafes or poorly lit living rooms. Is the 35mm f1.8 enough or am I gonna regret not getting the faster glass? Im just really worried about the focus speed mainly...
Honestly, the Sony FE 35mm f1.8 is the sweet spot for the a7IV. I've been using it for a while and I'm super satisfied with the focus speed. It's way cheaper than the GM but still delivers that pop you're looking for.
- Lightweight for Seattle hills
- Fast AF for kids
- Saves you $500 plus It just works without all that extra bulk.
