which prime lens should I grab for my Sony a7iv before this Saturday? I have a wedding gig in downtown Denver and my current setup just isnt gonna cut it for the low light reception.
I was looking at the Sony 35mm f1.4 GM since everyone raves about it but then I saw the Sigma 85mm f1.4 is basically legendary for portraits and now im spiraling. Some people say 35mm is too wide for ceremonies but then others say 85mm is too tight for the dance floor and I cant afford both right now.
I have exactly 1400 dollars to spend today.
- sony 35mm gm
- sigma 85mm dg dn
Should I prioritize the wider shot or the bokeh??
I would suggest the 35mm to stay safe. You might want to be careful with the 85mm at a reception... its just too tight for group shots or the dance floor.
- Sony FE 35mm f/1.4 GM is the more reliable bet for low light and fits your 1400 budget.
- Make sure to test your focus tonight so you dont have issues Saturday.
honestly im in the exact same boat and the stress is real. i've been looking at the Sony FE 35mm f1.4 GM and that Sigma 85mm f1.4 DG DN Art for my own Sony Alpha a7 IV all morning. i'm usually pretty satisfied with my kit and it works well for most things, but a big wedding with a $1400 limit definitely makes you overthink things. it's tough when you want to be safe but also want that legendary look for the clients. quick tip for the weekend:
- check if any shops have a used copy in mint condition. you might save enough to actually rent the other lens for the day so you arent stuck with just one focal length.
- also, make sure you double check your autofocus settings for low light specifically... sometimes the default tracking can get jumpy at f/1.4 during a busy reception. best of luck with the Denver gig, i'm still trying to make my mind up too.
@Reply #1 - good point! Tho I'm much more satisfied with Sigma 85mm f/1.4 DG DN Art.
- 11-blade aperture
- superior MTF charts Ngl, the bokeh tech works so well for receptions.
