What is actually the sharpest prime you can put on a Sony A7R V right now? Ive been looking at the 35mm GM and the 50mm f/1.2 but the benchmarks seem dated and people keep saying the 135mm is actually the king. Im doing huge landscape prints for a gallery in June and need crazy edge-to-edge detail...

Honestly, if you're chasing that raw resolution for the A7R V, you're looking at some incredible glass. I've spent years testing these for gallery prints and it's a bit of a rabbit hole. To be fair, those benchmarks you're looking at might seem old but glass doesn't degrade, and these G-Master lenses were basically over-engineered for future sensors anyway. In my experience, the rumors about the 135mm are totally spot on. If you want that crazy edge-to-edge detail for your gallery show, here's how I'd rank them based on pure resolving power:

  • Sony FE 135mm f/1.8 GM: This is still the king. I've used it for mountain panoramas and the detail in the far corners is just unreal. It handles 61MP like it's nothing.
  • Sony FE 50mm f/1.2 GM: Close second. It's technically more modern than the 135mm and the micro-contrast is stellar. Great for that medium-telephoto landscape look.
  • Sony FE 50mm f/1.4 GM: I've actually found this newer, lighter version to be slightly more consistent across the frame when you stop it down to f/5.6 or f/8 compared to the f/1.2.
  • Sony FE 35mm f/1.4 GM: Absolute workhorse, but technically just a hair softer in the extreme corners compared to the 50mm or 135mm. If you're really pushing for the sharpest possible result, the 135mm is the one, but it’s a tight focal length for landscapes. Honestly tho, you can't go wrong with any of these. Just make sure your tripod is rock solid because the A7R V will show every tiny bit of vibration at those resolutions. Wait, one more... if you want something wider, the Sony FE 24mm f/1.4 GM is no slouch either, but the 135mm is definitely the technical winner. Good luck with the gallery!
