Seriously which prime lens should I buy for my Sony Alpha before I lose my mind and sell the whole kit? I am so incredibly frustrated with this 28-70mm kit lens that came with my A7III, it is literally useless the second the sun goes down and everything I take looks like it was shot on a potato from 2005. I have my sisters engagement party coming up in London in three weeks and I am genuinely anxious that I wont be able to get a single decent shot in that dim restaurant they booked.

I have about 600 bucks to spend, maybe a tiny bit more if it is actually life changing, but I am just so done with grainy photos and that flat look you get with cheap zooms. I mostly want to do:

  • candid portraits of people laughing
  • detail shots of the ring and decor
  • shots in really crappy low light without it looking like a mess

Ive been looking at the Sony 35mm f1.8 or maybe a Sigma 50mm but I hear the Sigma is heavy and honestly I just want something that works and doesnt hunt for focus for ten seconds while the moment passes. Should I go wide or stick to something tighter? I just need one solid lens that wont fail me because right now I am feeling pretty defeated by this whole setup...

> I am so incredibly frustrated with this 28-70mm kit lens Ive been there... that kit glass is basically a paperweight indoors. In my experience, the Sony FE 35mm f/1.8 is the surgical tool you need. I used it for a wedding in a basement bar and those dual linear motors tracked eyes perfectly while the Sigma was still hunting. At f/1.8, the light gathering is massive compared to your current f/5.6 at the long end. Plus the 0.22m minimum focus is great for ring shots.
