honestly so fed up right now. Ive had my Canon EOS R50 for a couple months and the kit lens is driving me crazy for portraits. Everything looks flat and I cant get that nice blurry background everyone talks about unless im standing a mile away. My sisters wedding is coming up in literally three weeks in Austin and she keeps asking me to take some nice profile shots of her and the bridesmaids beforehand and im lowkey panicking because my current setup just isnt cutting it.

I really need to fix this fast before the shoot. Heres what I need to work with:

  • strict budget of under 300 dollars max since I just dropped cash on flights
  • needs to work natively on the RF-S mount or have a reliable cheap adapter thats not gonna glitch out
  • has to be good in low light cause the venue is kinda dark indoors
  • autofocus is a must because half the people wont stay still for two seconds

Is there actually a decent budget portrait lens for this camera or am I just expecting too much from a crop sensor setup without spending a fortune... what are you guys using that wont break the bank?

^ This. Also, if you want a tiny bit more working room indoors where space is tight, look at the Sigma 30mm f/1.4 DC DN Contemporary paired with a cheap adapter. In my experience, 50mm on crop can feel super zoomed in inside a cramped dressing room. Autofocus is solid and that extra light gathering is a lifesaver for dark venues.

> strict budget of under 300 dollars max Coming back to this thread to add a very practical option if you decide against the standard 50mm route. Consider the Viltrox AF 56mm f/1.4 XF or its Canon RF counterpart. While adapting manual lenses can save a few bucks, you need reliable autofocus for a wedding party. Another solid alternative is picking up a used EF lens along with the official Canon adapter. You get access to cheaper glass like the EF 50mm f/1.8 II without losing autofocus reliability. Just make sure to test any adapted setup thoroughly before the actual shoot day so there are no surprises with the autofocus speed in low light.

Dont panic! You can totally get that blurry background on a crop sensor without spending a fortune. Grab the Canon RF 50mm f/1.8 STM right now.

  • Super cheap at around $200 brand new
  • Native RF mount so zero adapter issues
  • Fast f/1.8 aperture handles dark indoor venues easily
  • Super lightweight and autofocus is plenty fast for moving bridesmaids Seriously, it totally transforms the R50 and you will love the results!
