Just picked up an R10 for some senior portraits I need to shoot in Chicago next month and I am totally lost on glass. My budget is pretty tight, like under 400 bucks if possible. I saw people recommending the RF 50mm f/1.8 everywhere, but then I read a few threads saying it acts kinda weird on crop sensors for portraits because of the focal length/depth of field issues. Is that actually true or just pixel peepers being annoying? I also looked at the Viltrox adapter stuff but it seems hit or miss. Does anyone have a solid go-to for portraits on this specific body that wont break the bank?
^ This. Also, honestly, the Canon RF 50mm f/1.8 STM is cheap for a reason. I used it on my R10 for a bit and unfortunately, the focus hunting in low light was a nightmare for me. It is sharp when it hits, but the motor is loud and it had issues with tracking faces during quicker movements. If you want something that actually feels like a portrait lens, look into the Canon RF 85mm f/2 Macro IS STM. It is a bit over your budget brand new, but you can find it used for around 400 if you check the usual sites. It gives way better compression for portraits than the 50mm ever will. Don't waste your cash on those cheap third-party adapters, they just feel clunky and unreliable in my experience.
> the focus hunting in low light was a nightmare ^ This. Seriously, grab the Canon RF 16mm f/2.8 STM for wider shots or hunt for a used Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS STM instead!
Honestly, people overthink that 50mm crop thing way too much. In my experience, shooting portraits on a crop body is mostly about your framing. Just grab something fast and go for it!
