so Ive had my Canon EOS R50 for about two weeks now and honestly Im super stressed out because I agreed to take some birthday portraits for my sister next month in Chicago and the kit lens just isnt giving me that blurry background look I really wanted... sorry if this is a totally basic question but I have like zero idea what lens to buy and my budget is strictly under 300 bucks since Im already broke from buying the camera. Ive been looking online but all the numbers and letters like RF and RF-S and f-stops are just confusing my brain so much and I keep worrying Ill buy the wrong thing and waste my money right before the shoot. What is actually the best budget portrait lens I can get for this specific camera without breaking the bank?
Before recommending anything specific, do you know if you'll be shooting indoors in a tight apartment or outside in a park? That distance changes everything for portraits.
- Canon RF 50mm f/1.8 STM
- Canon RF 85mm f/2 Macro IS STM Unfortunately the 50mm can feel a bit cramped on crop sensors sometimes.
@Reply #2 - good point! Space really matters. TL;DR: just grab the Canon RF 50mm f/1.8 STM for around 200 bucks. It gives that gorgeous blurry background you want without emptying your wallet. If you are shooting outside in Chicago, its pretty much the best cheap option for crop sensors like the R50. Honestly you wont regret it, Ive been super happy with mine for portraits.
Dont panic, weve all been there when starting out. For your R50, you need lenses with an RF or RF-S mount, and thankfully there is a solid budget option that wont break the bank.
- Canon RF 50mm f/1.8 STM (usually around 200 bucks, gives that nice blurry background) Just make sure whatever you buy says RF mount so it fits your camera body properly. Good luck with the shoot!
