My EF 85mm 1.2 is suddenly hunting like crazy on my R6 Mark II and I need a native replacement ASAP for a studio shoot next week. Budget is strictly under $2300.

  • native RF mount
  • eye-af must be instant
  • 85mm or 135mm preferred

Is the RF 85mm f1.2 the only real option for tack sharp eyes?

Honestly, that old EF 85mm 1.2 is legendary for its look but that heavy glass and dated ring-type USM just doesnt play nice with the R6 II's high-speed autofocus. If you want native and need to stay under $2300, you should seriously look at the Canon RF 135mm f1.8L IS USM. Ive used it for several studio sessions now and its actually sharper than the 85mm 1.2 L wide open. Plus, the 85mm is technically over your budget brand new anyway. Here is why the 135mm wins in my experience:

  • Nano USM motors are way faster for eye-af than the 85mm's heavier elements.
  • Built-in stabilization works with the R6 II IBIS for incredible steady shots.
  • The compression at 135mm is basically cheating for flattering portraits. In my experience, you wont miss the f1.2 aperture because f1.8 at 135mm gives such a thin depth of field anyway. The glass quality is top tier. If you absolutely need 85mm, the Canon RF 85mm f1.2L USM is the king but it'll blow your budget. Stick with the 135mm, you'll love the clinical sharpness.
