I am so sick of reading reviews and getting different answers everywhere. My sister's wedding is in like three weeks and she is totally counting on me for some of the portraits because she spent her entire budget on the venue and cant afford a second shooter. I am shooting on a Canon 90D and I am completely stuck on which way to go.
I have been looking at the Sigma 50mm f/1.4 Art because everyone says it is sharp as hell but then I read it has autofocus issues on DSLRs sometimes and I just cant deal with that risk right now. My other thought was the Canon 85mm f/1.8 USM but with the crop factor that is like 136mm which feels way too long for some of the indoor shots we are doing at the reception hall in downtown Seattle. I have about $650 to spend max and I dont want to buy something I am gonna regret or have to return two days before the ceremony.
I was even looking at the cheap Canon 50mm f/1.8 just to save the cash but I am worried it is gonna look cheap and amateur for a formal event. Is the Sigma actually worth the extra weight and money for a crop sensor or is the 85mm the better play even if I have to stand way back?...
> I have been looking at the Sigma 50mm f/1.4 Art because everyone says it is sharp as hell but then I read it has autofocus issues Honestly, I had issues with that Sigma 50mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art for Canon EF on my 90D. The focus hunting was just not as good as expected and ruined some great shots at a shoot last year. Unfortunately, the Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 USM is just way too tight for indoor weddings. Id go with the Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM instead. Its reliable and sharp enough for the price.
To add to the point above: how much floor space are you actually working with indoors? if its a tight Seattle venue, 85mm on that 90D will feel like a telescope. Maybe check these:
- Canon EF 35mm f/2 IS USM - 56mm equiv is perfect for portraits and the IS helps low-light.
- Tamron SP 45mm f/1.8 Di VC USD for Canon - very sharp and stays under $650. Both are way more reliable than that Sigma tho.
