So I just got the Canon R50 and its my first real camera. I only have that small lens it came with but I really want to get that blurry background look for taking pictures of my golden retriever. I keep seeing people talk about prime lenses but honestly I dont even know what that means lol. My logic was that a fixed lens would be better quality.

I found a 50mm 1.8 online for $170 but I read it acts like an 80mm? Im so confused. My goals are:

  • blurry backgrounds
  • under $200 budget
  • easy for a total beginner

Is that 50mm one the right choice or is it gonna be weird on my camera?

Honestly, the Canon RF 50mm f/1.8 STM is probably the best bang for your buck right now. You heard right about the 80mm thing tho. Since your R50 has a crop sensor, it basically magnifies the view. It sounds confusing but for portraits of your golden retriever, its actually a huge plus because it makes the dog look more natural and really separates them from the background. Youll definitely get those blurry backgrounds youre after. Just remember you cant zoom with it, so youll be doing the zoom with your feet by walking back and forth. One quick tip: try to get down low at the same level as your dogs eyes instead of shooting from standing up. It makes the photos look way more professional instantly.
