Okay so my brother just gave me his old Canon 90D because he upgraded to something way more expensive and I have literally no idea how to even turn it on properly but I am supposed to go to Yellowstone for a big family trip next Thursday and I really want to take good pictures of the mountains and maybe some animals if we see them. Right now I just have this one lens that came in the box but it feels kinda cheap and the pictures look a bit blurry or maybe I am just doing it wrong? I tried looking on Amazon but there are so many numbers like 18-135 or 50mm and f/2.8 and it is honestly making my head spin and I am starting to panic because I dont have much time left to order something before we leave.
I have about 600 dollars saved up for a new lens but I can maybe push it to 700 if it is really worth it but I only want to carry one single lens because I am gonna be hiking a lot and I dont want to be swapping parts in the dirt and messing up the inside of the camera. I just want something that can do a bit of everything like wide shots of the scenery but also zoom in a bit on a bison or a bird or something without it looking like a grainy potato.
Sorry if this is a super basic question and I sound like an idiot but I am totally lost and I really need help fast so I dont ruin my trip photos. What is like the one best all-around lens I should get that fits this 90D camera?
Honestly, I've spent thousands on gear for my 90D over the years and most of these all-in-one zooms are pretty disappointing. I remember taking a basic kit lens to Glacier Park a few years back and every single wide shot had terrible purple fringing on the mountain ridges. It was a total nightmare in post-processing. Unfortunately, most lenses that claim to do everything end up doing nothing particularly well because the glass elements just cant handle the wide-to-telephoto transition without losing major sharpness at the edges. Tbh, it’s frustrating when you're trying to capture a once-in-a-lifetime view and the gear just doesn't keep up. Since you're on a strict timeline and budget, the only lens that wont drive you crazy is the Canon EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM. Its got the Nano USM motor which is actually quite fast for tracking animals, though I found it still struggles in low light compared to my expensive L-series glass. If you want more reach for those Yellowstone bison, you might be tempted by the Tamron 18-400mm f/3.5-6.3 Di II VC HLD, but in my experience, the image quality at the long end is just too soft and muddy. I had issues with focus hunting on that one constantly and it was a mess. Stick with the Canon 18-135mm. The 18mm end is wide enough for the scenery, and 135mm gives you enough reach to keep a safe distance from the wildlife. Just dont expect it to look like a National Geographic cover. It’s a compromise, but for your budget, its basically the only stable option before you leave.
