What is the best lens I should buy for a Canon R5 if I only want to carry one single thing around? I just bought the camera because my friend said it was the best but honestly I am so lost and I feel kinda stupid asking this since I dont know what any of the numbers mean. Im leaving for a trip to Tokyo in ten days and really need to order something like yesterday.
I have maybe $1200 left for the lens. I want to take pictures of:
- street food
- temples
- my wife
Is there one that just does all of that? I dont want to be swapping things out while walking around...

Ive tried many lenses over the years, and this one stays on my camera 90% of the time. It handles low light well and the zoom is perfect for portraits. Its around $1200 and wont let you down.

man i am in the exact same boat right now. i am currently packing for a trip to london and i am totally paralyzed by this exact choice... its a lot of money to drop when you are worried about making the wrong call. last time i went to kyoto i brought three lenses and hated my life by day three because my shoulder was dying, so i am definitely doing the one-lens thing this time too. but man, the reliability factor is stressing me out. here is the research i have been obsessing over for my own trip:
- Canon RF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM: the build quality is top tier and super reliable if it rains, but i am worried that f4 might be a bit slow for those dark restaurant shots.
- Canon RF 24-240mm f4-6.3 IS USM: huge range which is awesome for temples, but be careful because it isnt weather sealed and the image quality can be a bit soft at the edges.
- Canon RF 35mm f1.8 Macro IS STM: incredible for street food and low light, but i am scared i will feel trapped with just one view. i still havent pulled the trigger yet because i keep second-guessing everything. every time i think i have it figured out i change my mind. hope we both figure it out before our flights... its a tough spot to be in when you just want to get it right.
^ This. Also, I was super satisfied with a single-lens setup when I did Kyoto. Makes the trip way better. Just know that lower f-numbers like 2.8 give you that blurry background but usually add weight.
- Are you okay with a bulky setup, or do you want something light?
