What is the best all-around lens for the Canon EOS R5? I have been shooting professionally for years but I just made the jump to mirrorless and the weight/balance on this body is throwing me off. I have a destination shoot in the UK starting in ten days and my old EF 24-70 with the adapter feels way too front-heavy for 10-hour days.

I need one native RF lens that can do it all. Budget is around $2,300. Is the RF 24-105mm f/4L sharp enough for the 45MP sensor or am I gonna regret not having that f/2.8 speed for indoor shots? I dont want to carry a bag of primes...

Honestly, you are gonna love the R5!! For a trip like that where you are walking all day, just go for the Canon RF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM. It is seriously amazing and way lighter than your old setup! I was worried about the f/4 too but the IBIS on the R5 is basically magic... you can shoot handheld at crazy slow speeds and still get super sharp shots. Plus that extra reach is a total lifesaver when you cant move closer. Its such a safer bet for a busy shoot than lugging around the heavy 2.8! Quick tip: make sure you enable the lens electronic MF setting so you can override the focus manually if needed. You wont regret it, the sharpness is fantastic even on that 45mp sensor!

Just seeing this now. If you're doing 10-hour days in the UK, the Canon RF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM is probably the most logical choice. Regarding the 45MP sensor, the lens is plenty sharp for professional delivery unless you're doing massive gallery prints and peeping at 100% all day.

  • Resolution: it holds up well, and the digital lens optimizer in-camera does a lot of heavy lifting for native RF glass.
  • Budget: it leaves you with $1,000 extra. Use that for high-speed storage like the SanDisk 128GB Extreme PRO CFexpress Type B. The weight savings alone will save your wrists. Pack extra Canon LP-E6NH Lithium-Ion Battery units because the R5 runs through them quickly, especially with the high refresh rate EVF. Dont worry about the f/4 indoors; just trust the sensor to handle the ISO bump. Its a solid workhorse combo.

I went through this exact struggle when I switched. I tried the f/4 but ended up trading it for the Canon RF 24-70mm f/2.8L IS USM. Since its designed for the RF mount, the weight distribution feels way more centered than the adapted EF glass. I spent a week shooting in London last year and having that extra stop for pubs and dark streets was a lifesaver. Its insanely sharp.
