Ive been shooting with Canon gear since the 5D Mark II days, so switching over to the R5 was supposed to be a breeze, but honestly, Im having a total crisis picking a primary lens for this body. I feel like my old EF glass just isnt doing the sensor justice, and I keep getting frustrated with the adapter bulk. I have a trip to Iceland coming up in three weeks and I really dont want to be swapping primes in the rain like a maniac.
Here is what I need:
- Budget is around 2500 bucks, maybe a tiny bit more if its really worth it.
- Needs to handle both landscape and some street portraits.
- Weight matters because I hike a lot, but I dont want to sacrifice sharpness.
Ive been looking at the RF 24-70mm f/2.8 but the price tag is making me sweat, and I keep reading conflicting reviews about the weight balancing on the R5. Is it actually worth the upgrade from the 24-105 f/4 or am I gonna miss the extra reach? Im honestly just so anxious about spending this much money and making the wrong call before I fly out. What would you guys grab if you could only take one lens to cover everything...
Re: Honestly, just grab the Canon RF 24-105mm f/4L... I gotta disagree with skipping the f/2.8. I took the Canon RF 24-70mm f/2.8L IS USM to the Highlands and the extra stop was a game changer for those moody, low-light evening shots. The weight isnt that bad if you use a decent strap. Just be careful with dust when you're near the waterfalls. Honestly, dont sweat the price if you want that crispness.
Honestly, just grab the Canon RF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM. Its way lighter for hiking than the 24-70 and that extra reach in Iceland is a lifesaver when you cant get close. The f/2.8 is nice but the weight adds up fast on the trail. Youll save a good chunk of cash too. Dont stress it, you wont miss the stop of light that much with the R5 sensor.
Totally agree with the guys above, but honestly, consider the Canon RF 28-70mm f/2L USM if you can swing the budget! It is heavy but wow, the sharpness is insane. If that is too much, stick to the f/4 and put the savings into a solid filter kit for those Iceland waterfalls.
- Pack a good rain cover since the wind there is brutal.
- Don't forget an extra Canon LP-E6NH Battery because the R5 eats power.
