switched from my old 5D to the R6 last year but im still lugging around heavy EF glass with the adapter. its getting kinda annoying for hiking trips and basic city walks. need a native RF zoom thats light but decent quality for under $900. whats the best everyday zoom?

actually, @Reply #1 - good point, but i disagree. over the years the Canon RF 24-105mm f4 L IS USM proved way more reliable for travel. its worth finding a used one.

> need a native RF zoom thats light but decent quality for under $900. Just caught this thread. Making the jump from EF to RF glass was the best thing I ever did for my back, but finding that sweet spot for reliability and budget is tough. In my experience, some of the cheaper RF lenses can feel a bit like toys, but they actually hold up well over the years. Before I suggest the best deals... how much zoom range do you actually use when you're out hiking? Like, are you mostly doing wide landscapes or do you find yourself needing reach for things further away? If you want something versatile that doesnt feel flimsy, the Canon RF 24-240mm f4-11 IS USM is worth a look. Its usually well under your $900 limit. Its way more solid than the basic kit zooms and covers basically everything for a city walk. I have used several RF lenses now and this one is the most convenient when you want to leave the camera bag at home.

Unfortunately, native RF glass is so expensive.

To add to the point above: Raymondstarp is totally right about the L series glass being more reliable for long term use! Honestly, if you can find a used Canon RF 24-105mm f/4 L IS USM for around $800-900, it is a total game changer for the R6. I love how sharp it stays throughout the range!! It is basically the perfect companion for that body. If you are worried about the price or buying used tho, here are a few things I did to save cash while staying safe:

  • Check the Canon refurbished store online, they have amazing deals that still come with a warranty so it is super low risk.
  • Look for sellers who are splitting up a kit bundle, you can usually snag a brand new lens cheaper that way.
  • Stick to the native glass for sure, the autofocus is just so much snappier than using the old EF adapter. You're gonna feel so much better on those hikes without that extra chunky adapter bulk. Let me know if you want some help hunting down a good listing or checking a seller out!
