Just got my R5II preorder and Im agonizing over the lens choice for my Iceland trip this October. My logic was to grab the RF 24-70mm f/2.8 L cause everyone says its the gold standard but then I saw reviews saying the 24-105mm f/4 is actually better for travel cause of the reach. Kinda stuck cause I do a lot of low light street stuff so f/4 feels risky but $2300 is a lot to spend if 70mm isnt long enough. I also saw that 24-105mm f/2.8 but thats a total brick and way over my $2500 budget. Is the f/2.8 really worth the weight for a general do-it-all lens on this sensor?
The R5 II sensor demands high quality glass to really shine. Since you mentioned low light street work, that extra stop on the f/2.8 is basically essential for keeping ISO levels manageable.
- Canon RF 24-70mm f/2.8L IS USM: Exceptional optics and 5-stop IS.
- Canon RF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM: More range but f/4 struggles in dim light. I'd recommend the 24-70mm since you can crop that 45MP sensor to mimic 105mm anyway.
