Which lens is going to give me the best look for portraits on my Canon 90D? Im really stuck between a few choices and I keep going back and forth on what to actually buy. I have about 900 bucks saved up from my birthday and I need to make a decision soon because im doing my sisters graduation photos in early June at a park here in Seattle.
Im mostly looking at the Sigma 50-100mm f1.8 Art lens because I heard it is amazing for crop sensors like the 90D but honestly it looks heavy and im a bit worried about the autofocus being slow since its not a native lens. My other options are just getting the cheap Canon 50mm f1.8 (the nifty fifty) and maybe the 85mm f1.8 too? Or should I just blow the whole budget on the Sigma? I want that really blurry background look but I also dont want to be standing a mile away from her just to get her head in the frame. The 50mm would be like an 80mm on my camera which seems okay for portraits but then the 85mm would be like 135mm which is pretty long for a crowded park. Has anyone used these on a 90D specifically? I really want the sharpness to be there since the 90D has so many megapixels and I dont want a lens that cant keep up...
I've been shooting with the 90D for a while now and honestly, I'm super satisfied with sticking to native Canon glass. That 32.5MP sensor is really picky about sharpness, so you want something that communicates perfectly with the body. I tried some third-party stuff but the autofocus hunting drove me nuts... For your graduation shoot in June, these have worked well for me:
- Canon EF 50mm f1.8 STM - it's so light and basically stays on my camera.
- Canon EF 85mm f1.8 USM - the compression on this is gorgeous for headshots. The Sigma 50-100mm f1.8 DC HSM Art is a beast, but it's really heavy for a long day at the park. I'd go with the 85mm because even tho it feels long, that background blur is way better for busy areas. You'll be really happy with the focus speed on these native ones, no complaints at all from my end. It also saves you a ton of cash compared to the Sigma! Just make sure you have enough space to back up a bit.
