I'm really stuck between getting the Canon EF 35mm f/2 IS USM or the Sigma 30mm f/1.4 Art for my 90D and honestly i cant decide which way to go. I've been using the kit lens for ages now but i really want something sharper for when i go out shooting street stuff around London at night. The Sigma looks amazing because of that f/1.4 aperture which would be huge for low light but ive heard some weird things about the autofocus being hit or miss on dslrs and i really dont want to deal with calibration stuff right now. On the other hand the Canon 35mm has image stabilization which seems like a lifesaver for handheld video or just slower shutter speeds when im in a dark pub or something.
My budget is pretty firm at around 500 pounds and i really need to pull the trigger by the end of the month because im headed to Edinburgh for a long weekend and want to have it mastered by then. The 35mm is a bit narrower on the crop sensor though so i worry it might feel tight for indoor shots with friends. Is the Sigma's extra speed worth the potential headache or should i just stick with the reliability of the Canon glass? I'm leaning toward the Canon for the IS but that f/1.4 is calling my name...
Ive used both on my 90D and honestly the Canon EF 35mm f/2 IS USM is a really decent option. While the Sigma 30mm f/1.4 DC HSM Art is fast, the Canon just works more reliably.
- Use the IS for sharp handheld shots in dim pubs.
- Stick with Canon glass for better autofocus consistency on your DSLR. Youre gonna have a great time with it in Edinburgh!
