What is the best budget prime lens for a Canon R10?

so I finally got my R10 after saving for like six months but honestly the kit lens is kind of driving me crazy with how it performs in low light... I really want a prime lens for my trip to New Orleans in two weeks but my budget is strictly under 300 bucks since the camera body already drained my savings.

Ive been looking at the RF 50mm f1.8 because literally everyone on the internet says it is the best value lens ever but then I started thinking about the crop factor. Since the R10 is APS-C that 50mm is gonna act like an 80mm right? My logic was that it would be great for portraits of my kids but I am terrified it is gonna be way too tight for walking around the French Quarter. I dont want to be standing across the street just to get a decent shot of a storefront.

Then I found the RF 28mm f2.8 pancake lens which looks amazing for travel but I read some forum posts saying f2.8 isnt fast enough to get that really blurry background look I want. So now I am stuck. Do I go for the 50mm and just deal with the zoom or get the 28mm and maybe regret the lack of bokeh? Or is there some secret third option I dont know about? I heard about adapting old EF lenses but that seems super bulky and I want to keep things light for all the walking we are gonna do. I feel like I am overthinking this but I dont want to waste my money on something that wont work for what I need...

In my experience, you are right to be wary of the Canon RF 50mm f1.8 STM for travel. Its just too tight on your R10 for narrow streets. I have tried many setups over the years and the Canon RF 28mm f2.8 STM is the safer, more reliable bet:

  • way more versatile for buildings
  • tiny and light for walking
  • f2.8 is still plenty for low light Tbh, dont overthink the bokeh, you will appreciate the wider shots more.
