Where can I find the best Black Friday camera discounts that are actually legit and not just some marketing trick? I've been trying to do my homework but honestly I'm a complete newbie and I have no idea where to even start looking for a real camera. I've always just used my old iPhone for everything but my daughter is graduating next year and I really want to take some nice, clear photos of her on the stage and maybe some family portraits afterward without them looking all blurry or dark.

I have about $600 saved up which I know is probably peanuts to people who do this for a living but it's a big deal for me and I don't want to mess it up. I keep seeing all these ads for "Early Black Friday" deals on places like Amazon and Best Buy but then I stumbled onto some forums talking about B&H Photo and Adorama and I've never heard of them so I'm kinda scared to put my credit card info in if they aren't safe. Are those places better than just going to a big box store?

Also I'm super confused about the actual timing of these things. Like do the prices actually drop lower on the Friday itself or should I just grab something now if it says it's on sale? I'm looking for something easy to use because I don't understand the difference between a DSLR and a mirrorless thingy or why some lenses are so much more expensive than the camera itself. I just want something that makes my pictures look better than my phone does.

  • Is it better to buy a bundle with all the extra bags and stuff?
  • Should I look at the manufacturer websites directly?
  • Are there specific models that always go on sale this time of year?

I'm just really worried about spending my whole budget on something that's actually outdated or not a good deal at all. Living out in rural Oregon means I can't really go talk to a specialist in person so I'm relying on whatever I find on my laptop. I'm just staring at all these tabs and feeling like I'm drowning in specs I don't understand...

Hey! Totally get the stress, buying your first real setup is a minefield ngl. First off, breathe... you can definitely do better than an iPhone with $600 if you're smart about it. Regarding B&H and Adorama, I've spent literally thousands of dollars with both over the years and they are 100% legit. In my experience, they're actually way better than big box stores because their customer service actually knows what a sensor is. Most of the early Black Friday stuff is the real deal too. Manufacturers usually set a minimum advertised price so the price at Best Buy will be the same as B&H. If you see a price drop now, it rarely goes lower on the actual Friday. Bundles are mostly a trap tbh. You get a cheap tripod that'll break in a week and a bag that looks like a lunchbox. Better to spend that money on the glass. One thing to keep in mind though, shooting from the stands at a graduation is a whole different beast than portraits in the backyard. To give you the best advice, I gotta know a couple things... how far back from the stage are you gonna be sitting? Like, are we talking front row or way back in the bleachers? Also, do you want something that fits in a coat pocket or are you okay carrying a real looking camera around your neck?
