i've been staring at my screen for like three hours trying to decide between the sony a6400 and the fuji x-t30 ii and my head is spinning lol. I really need to pull the trigger this week because i'm heading to japan in mid-october and i need time to learn the controls before i go. i love the fuji colors but the sony autofocus seems way better for street stuff. my budget is strictly under 950 including a lens which is tough.

  • budget: max 950 bucks
  • timeline: need it by next week
  • use case: street photos and travel

where are the secret spots for discounts right now? is it better to risk a used body from mpb or just wait for a flash sale at adorama or somewhere? i'm totally stuck...

Stop hunting for new sales and hit up MPB right now! For under 950, you can definitely snag a Sony Alpha a6400 24.2MP Mirrorless Camera and still afford a lens.

  • Check MPB for Excellent condition used units
  • Pair it with a Sony E 16-50mm f/3.5-5.6 PZ OSS Lens The 425 phase-detect points on that Sony are legit magic for street shots. Its way faster than the Fuji AF. Youll love it!

> i'm heading to japan in mid-october and i need time to learn the controls before i go. I had a blast in Osaka last year with a kit I found in the B&H open-box section. Seriously, check their used tab daily. I grabbed the Sony ZV-E10 Mirrorless Camera with 16-50mm Lens and it works well for street snaps. The autofocus is basically cheating. I was really happy with how it handled the crowds and its way cheaper than the a6400.

^ This. Also, unfortunately, I found that waiting for flash sales at big retailers usually leads to disappointment. They rarely drop prices on specific mid-range models right when you need them. My experience with the Fujifilm X-T30 II with XC 15-45mm f/3.5-5.6 OIS PZ was actually quite frustrating for street work. I had issues with the tracking not keeping up with pedestrians in Shinjuku, which is exactly where youre headed. It just wasnt as good as expected for candid moments compared to the Sony real-time tracking systems. If you want that Fuji look without the AF lag, you might consider looking at the Fujifilm X-S10 Mirrorless Digital Camera. It has better ergonomics and IBIS which is huge for travel. I found one recently on KEH in excellent condition for a decent price. Honestly, dont overlook the Sony Alpha a6100 with 16-50mm f/3.5-5.6 OSS. It lacks the weather sealing of the a6400, but the autofocus is identical. You could save about 200 bucks there and put it toward a faster lens like the Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 DC DN Contemporary for Sony E which will serve you way better in low-light Japanese alleys than the kit lens. Shipping from KEH or the B and H used department is usually very fast, so youll definitely make your timeline if you order by Monday.

  • Honestly, dont sleep on the used market for this trip. I totally agree with the others that Sony is the move for those crowded Tokyo streets. Their tracking is just way more reliable than Fuji in my experience... Since you are on a strict budget, you should look at the Sony Alpha a6100 Mirrorless Camera. It has the exact same autofocus system as the a6400 but costs less because it uses a plastic body instead of magnesium. Tbh, it feels plenty sturdy for travel. If you grab a used body, you can use the savings to get the Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 DC DN Contemporary for Sony E. This lens is amazing! It is so much sharper than the standard kit lens and handles low light in those narrow Kyoto alleyways perfectly. It is a fantastic combo for under 950.
  • Check KEH for Excellent or Like New Minus grades
  • Look for Open Box deals specifically at Adorama
  • Grab a spare Sony NP-FW50 Lithium-Ion Rechargeable Battery since battery life is a bit short on these models Having that constant f/2.8 aperture is gonna be a lifesaver for night street photography!

If you are jumping on a plane in a few weeks, reliability is everything. I would stick to a used body from a place that offers a warranty like KEH or MPB because flash sales on brand new gear can be hit or miss for shipping times...

  • Sony Alpha a6400 Mirrorless Camera: This is basically the safe choice. It has decent weather sealing and the autofocus system is very consistent for street stuff. It feels a bit more solid in the hand than the Fuji does.
  • Fujifilm X-T30 II Mirrorless Camera: Great colors and the dials are nice, but it lacks weather sealing. The autofocus is fine for stationary subjects but it struggles more with tracking moving people compared to the Sony. To stay under 950, you might want to look for the Sony E 16-50mm f/3.5-5.6 PZ OSS Lens used. It is small and keeps the kit portable for walking around all day. Tbh, I would rather have a tested used camera with a return policy than a new one that shows up a day before your flight...
