Best budget-friendly portrait lens for a Fujifilm X-S20 body?

What is actually the best budget portrait lens for an X-S20 because honestly I am so over this kit lens and its flat, boring look. I saved up for months for this body because everyone said Fuji colors are magic and while the camera itself is great, the XC 15-45mm I got with it is just... depressing. I've been trying to get some nice shots of my sister for her graduation photos coming up next month in Chicago but everything looks like it was taken on an old iPhone. There is literally zero background separation and the autofocus keeps hunting whenever I try to get close and its driving me crazy. I'm getting really frustrated because I spent all this money and I'm not seeing that pro look I see everyone else getting with their Fujis.

I've got maybe 350 dollars max to spend right now, maybe 400 if I really stretch it, but I'm looking for something that actually gives me that creamy bokeh and sharp eyes. I've been looking at a few options but I'm totally stuck:

  • the fujifilm 35mm f2
  • the viltrox 56mm f1.4
  • maybe a used 50mm f2 if i can find one

I just dont know what to trust anymore. Is the Viltrox actually good or is it just cheap? I need something that plays nice with the X-S20's autofocus system because I am still very much a beginner and I really dont want to be messing with manual focus while my sister is losing her patience with me lol. I'm honestly just tired of scrolling through YouTube reviews that all contradict each other and half of them feel like ads anyway.

Does anyone have real experience with a solid prime lens that wont break the bank? I'm worried the 50mm might be too tight for some of the indoor party shots we have planned but then the 35mm might not be portrait-y enough and wont give me that blurry background I'm craving. I dont know. I just want to stop feeling like I wasted my money on this setup...

> Is the Viltrox actually good or is it just cheap? Unfortunately, budget third-party glass was not as good as expected and I had issues with focus. Grab a used Fujifilm XF 50mm f2 R WR instead, you wont regret it. I can help you find a deal!

tbh, i totally get the frustration with that kit lens. I spent years trying to save money on glass that promised the moon but just ended up with blurry photos. If you want that professional look without the headache, you should really look at the Sigma 56mm f1.4 DC DN Contemporary for Fujifilm X. I tried the Viltrox for a graduation once and the focus hunting was a nightmare... almost missed the walk across the stage. The Sigma is a totally different experience. Its insanely sharp at f1.4 and the background just melts away in a way the f2 lenses cant match. It might feel a bit tight for a small indoor party, but for those portraits in Chicago? Its perfect. You get that nice compression that makes faces look great. Trust me, dont gamble on the Viltrox if youre already stressed. Having reliable autofocus is worth the extra few bucks.

I've tested a ton of Fuji glass over the years and for that specific pro look, focal length compression is key.

  • Viltrox 56mm f1.4 XF AF: Pure bokeh king for the price. Its sharp enough and AF is snappy on the X-S20.
  • Fujifilm XF 50mm f2 R WR: Insanely sharp and fast, but f2 wont give you as much background blur. Tbh the Viltrox is a legit tool, not just cheap junk. Itll be tight indoors though.

Exactly what I was thinking
