Ive been shooting Fuji for like four years now but mostly just street and portraits with my 35mm f2. Planning a big trip to Zion and Bryce Canyon next month and I realized my current kit is way too narrow for those massive vistas. I was looking at the 10-24mm f4 but Im worried about the sharpness at the edges since the X-T30 II sensor is pretty demanding and I want to do some large prints later.
- budget is under 900 bucks
- weight matters cuz Im hiking all day
- versatility vs prime sharpness
Should I just go for the 14mm f2.8 prime or is the zoom versatility worth the trade off in quality for these specific parks...
Like someone mentioned, those canyons are just massive. I'd grab the Sigma 10-18mm f2.8 DC DN Contemporary. It's way lighter for hiking and honestly sharper than the Fuji zooms across the whole frame tho.
I took my X-T30 to Zion last fall and learned the hard way that 14mm often isnt wide enough for the scale of the canyon walls. I ended up swapping to the Fujifilm XF 10-24mm f4 R OIS WR and it basically lived on my camera. While the Fujifilm XF 14mm f2.8 R is technically sharper at the edges and has less distortion for those 30-inch prints, the zooms flexibility in tight spaces is a lifesaver.
- 10-24mm: f4 is fine for landscapes, plus OIS helps in low light canyons
- 14mm: much lighter at 235g but fixed focal length is tricky
- Budget: the zoom fits under your 900 limit easily The edge sharpness on the 10-24mm holds up well enough if you stop down to f/8. Zion is huge, so having that 10mm option is worth the tiny sacrifice in prime-level crispness, imo.
man i am in the exact same boat as you and it is honestly so frustrating. i have been digging through mtf charts on sites like opticallimits for weeks trying to find something that actually holds up at the corners for my own zion trip but everything looks so mediocre in the lab tests. unfortunately it seems like there is always a trade off that i just cant get past... either the distortion is a mess or the weight is just too high for hiking. i have been dealing with this exact same dilemma for months and still havent found a clear winner, especially trying to stay under that same budget. it is super disappointing that we have to choose between sharp edges and actually being able to carry the thing all day... i keep looking at raw sample galleries on dpreview but nothing has convinced me yet. i just want something technically proficient that doesnt break the bank or my back but nothing seems to fit the bill.
Did this last week, worked perfectly

I saw this earlier and unfortunately I am in the exact same boat. It is quite a letdown when you realize the gear you have been relying on for street work just isnt up to the task for a massive landscape trip.
- To add to the point above: I really think you should stick with native Fujifilm glass if you want any kind of long-term reliability out in the dust and wind.
- I have had too many issues with third-party brands having mechanical failures or loose mounts right when I needed them most.
- Just get a wide prime from the main Fuji line and try to make the fixed focal length work for you. It is a shame that we are still dealing with these trade-offs after so many years in the system. I have spent hours looking at the same performance charts as you and it is just frustrating to see such mediocre results at the edges. I really wish there was a better answer for those of us who want to do large prints without carrying a massive kit.
Bookmarked, thanks!
